Main game modes

1. Proving Grounds: very basic solo training.


2. Team Training: exercise battles where the teams are composed of 1 to 15 players. You can select the map and the duration of the battle, and make it invite-only or open to the public.


3. Random Battles: generally played 15 vs 15, with different rulesets. You may have to destroy all enemies or capture their base (Standard); destroy all enemies or capture a neutral base (Encounter); destroy all enemies or assault/defend a single starting base (Assault). When playing on Tier X vehicles you may get into a massive 30 vs 30 battle on an even bigger map (Grand Battle).


4. Ranked Battles (seasonal and available on Tier X tanks): played 15 vs 15, with skill-based matchmaking. In Random Battles, a player’s win/loss ratio is never taken into account when teams are composed. In Ranked Battles, team formation is influenced by Ranks that are obtained by winning.


5. Team Battles: played 7 vs 7 on Tier VI–VIII vehicles; the player’s team should defend or capture a single base (or destroy all the opposing side’s vehicles).


6. Stronghold: played 7 vs 7 (for Tier VI), 10 vs 10 (for Tier VIII), or 15 vs 15 (for Tier X); open both for members of Clans and unaffiliated players (Legionnaires).


7. Global Map: play 15 vs 15 on Tier VI, VIII, or X vehicles to capture provinces on the map; available to Clan members only.

Classes

1. Heavy tanks: generally well armored, relatively slow, and not very maneuverable; good at breaking through choke points or defending them.


2. Light tanks: fast, with great spotting and thin armor; good for helping allies target enemies, and fast surprise raids.


3. Medium tanks: the most versatile vehicles sitting between heavy and light tanks, with very different stats (and tactics).


4. Tank destroyers: mostly snipers hiding in cover, though some can handle a close-range fight well.


5. Artillery: slow moving and reloading, almost defenseless at short range, but able to hurl shells at a ballistic curve all over the battlefield, damaging and/or weakening up to several enemies at once. Unique because of their RTS-style “bird’s eye” view employed.

Beginner tips

1. World of Tanks is easy to learn, hard to master, and fun all the way to the top.


2. Progression (unlocking more and more powerful vehicles from Tier I to Tier X for experience earned in battles) helps you learn the game gradually, from the basics to advanced concepts.


3. World of Tanks offers tactical depth. Victory depends on your positioning, reading the minimap, using cover, working with allies, hitting enemy tanks in places your rounds can penetrate, thrown in with a little boldness, imagination, and luck.


4. Gameplay differs greatly for different classes and even different vehicles of one class; try them all to find the ones you like the most.


5. Know your vehicle. Play on its strengths and compensate for its weaknesses: hide your soft spots; snipe lightly armored tanks with accurate guns; take the fight to those not so accurate but well protected; use hit-and-run tactics on tanks equipped with autoloaders (able to fire several shots in rapid succession and then go for a long reload).


6. Use your tank’s effective armor: the sharper the angle at which an enemy shell hits the armor, the thicker (effectively) it is; the shell may even bounce off.

Tournaments

1. World of Tanks holds plenty of tournaments. To participate, go to Tournaments page on the official site (worldoftanks.com). Once there, you can search for tournaments by parameters, find a team or create your own. Winning gets you awesome prizes and recognition: fight well and you might become a pro.

Community

1. World of Tanks was launched in 2010, and its player community has amassed colossal expertise. There are user video guides on literally everything in the game (including how to play on every tank and map), and also lots of wikis, both official and unofficial.


2. There are tons of official and user-created mods for World of Tanks, from cosmetic ones to those allowing you to fine-tune your experience. Just make sure to stay away from prohibited ones (check the official forums for more info on that).


3. Be social. Coordinate your efforts with teammates, and accept invitations for Platoons. Add in-game friends and form Clans, or join existing ones. Don’t forget to bring your real-life friends into the game: playing together with them is super fun.
